“I was in the middle of a badminton match and a woman came running and asked to talk to our teacher. I saw his face crumble. He became serious,” said student Yasmine Anarouche.

The teacher asked the students to stand in a corner of the gym and went to lock the doors. “He told us someone had been seen with a weapon,” she said. About a quarter of an hour later, their class was evacuated from the school, as was the rest of the establishment.

The Police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) reports that it has received 911 calls regarding a man who was seen “with a firearm outside CEGEP”. Other people were then with him, according to information passed on to police.

At some point, the group of people would have entered the CEGEP, without, however, uttering threats against the people there. “No one saw them in possession of the firearm, so we know it was not shown and that there were no threats,” the door summed up. Montreal Police spokeswoman Véronique Dubuc said the wanted persons had left Cégep before police arrived.

Ibtihal Ettamli and Mayssa Mokkadem were in physics class when they saw the police arrive. “We did not really know what was going on. We were stressed because we did not know if we were going to leave school or not,” says Mayssa. After being ordered to evacuate by the Cégep speaker, the young women went out without coat, like many other students.

Evacuation “as a preventive measure”

More than a dozen patrol cars, including specialized intervention teams, met in the area, specifically on rue Marie-Victorin, not far from the boulevard Maurice-Duplessis. On the way from The press On Tuesday, many students, staff and other people gathered on the street outside the dormitory under the snow.

Zineb Lambaret and Marc-Antoine Fournier on the sidewalk observed the scene. “I’m really surprised. It’s the first time this has happened, such a situation,” the young man said. “It’s stressful, we did not get any more explanations,” his classmate added.

“A girl came running to our class to ask us to evacuate. We hurried to pick up our friend’s coat and left, ”says Amélie Tremblay-Roy, who is enrolled in early childhood education. His friend Eduardo Chero-Rodriguez did not have time to get his. “My friend lent me his jacket,” he laughs.

The SPVM spokesman confirms that an evacuation of CEGEP was organized “as a precautionary measure” while a major operation was underway to “secure the premises”.

Searching for suspects

As soon as the first police arrived on Tuesday afternoon, a person was arrested, but he was released shortly after because his arrest was ultimately “unfounded.”

However, SPVM investigators are still looking for additional suspects. Several police officers were also seen investigating the area at the time of the incident.

Note: at the end of the day, the police were still unable to confirm the presence of a weapon as no weapon had yet been identified and no arrests had been made. “It is important to mention that no one was threatened with a firearm, nor do we have any injuries,” Véronique Dubuc also clarified.
