Do we have to be in a relationship to be happy?

In the collective unconscious, romantic relationships are essential for good development. But do we really have to be in a relationship to be happy? Let’s check in.

For many people, having a romantic relationship is synonymous with a fulfilling and happy life. Through movies, series, social networks or media in general, the key to happiness is to fall in love. A romantic relationship can, of course, bring a lot of joy into everyday life. But it does not remain a source of unfailing happiness. You can be just as happy without being in a relationship. It is all about learning to live alone, to accept oneself and flourish completely without being dependent on another. Very often we are afraid of being unhappy if we are alone. But rest assured, that is far from the case.

Loneliness can be beneficial

Contrary to many people’s beliefs, loneliness or being alone can actually benefit your relationships with others. Too many scare or create the feeling of loneliness anxiety. But it is often underestimated. It is important not to be dependent on each other in a relationship. Whether she is in love or kind. It can thus be good to be alone from time to time to, for example, create the lack of better finding oneself later. The best relationships flourish with people who are completely confident in spending time alone. Who is not afraid of loneliness. This is how they can flourish, without necessarily being in a relationship or without being with their partner 24 hours a day.

Learn to love and understand yourself

To flourish fully without being in a relationship, you must definitely learn to love yourself. But above all, first and foremost, understand yourself. Easier said than done? Of course ! But here are some tips for learning to love yourself and your own company, without relying on a romantic relationship to be happy. The key to being happy is not to be in a relationship, but to understand that you are a whole person.

  • Keep a diary. Writing can be very liberating. It can help you better understand your own thoughts and feelings. 5 or 10 minutes a day is more than enough.
  • Do some meditation. This is probably the most effective way to achieve optimal self-understanding and much deeper self-esteem. So do not hesitate!
  • Connect to nature. For example, you can take short walks in nature to really reconnect with yourself. It can help you feel better and more comfortable when you are alone.
  • Uses art. Whether it is music, painting, sculpture, it will also allow you to connect deeper with yourself. Many people use coloring to get into a much calmer state of mind.

Focus on what you love

To be happy being alone or single, the important thing is to be able to focus on the things you love. Instead of spending all your time looking for your better half, spend time finding something you are passionate about. It can be travel, excursions with friends, sports, painting … anything! You just have to find your purpose. And this goal is not necessarily to be in a relationship for everyone. Be careful that starting a family can also be a goal. But your life does not have to be primarily about that. Otherwise, you run the risk of becoming unhappy when your own person has lots of beautiful things to offer.

Happiness: a state of mind

True happiness is, above all, a state of mind. It does not depend on anyone but you and should not depend on your partner. Therefore, it can be a bonus to be in a relationship, but not the very source of your joy or happiness. It is important to have a positive mindset and focus on yourself. You need to know how to be optimistic. Of course, that is often easier said than done. But it is a very important point to succeed in flourishing emotionally, professionally or socially.
