The secret behind a long and beautiful relationship is manifold for the couple who met in their twenties but who only fell in love in the early 50s.

“In a long relationship, you go through all kinds of difficulties, pitfalls, happiness, and you have to want to continue and make your marriage a success,” Louise Turcot explains. That’s the secret, in my opinion: If we really want to, we will pull ourselves together, listen to each other, discuss, respect each other and let go. »

“Let go, oh yes!” Adds Gilles, who describes himself as a “bucké” who has known to “debuck” himself over the years. “Loyalty is also crucial. Then you have to choose your matches.”

The duo sees it as an advantage and a gift to understand each other at work. Together, they overcome the stress of the first and enjoy being involved in their profession. They also have similar careers filled with projects in film, television, theater and teaching that allow them to understand and support each other.

“It’s hard to have a successful marriage without respect for the other person’s work and empathy for the person you are living with,” continues the one who has only one piece of advice to give to young couples who want to follow their example. “Turn off your cell phones!”

Every day, Gilles charms her boyfriend with her humor and lightness, while Louise, the family woman who cooks like a chef, is “simply adorable” in the eyes of her lover.

The story of a thunder

Louise Turcot and Gilles Renaud share the same year of birth (they are both 77 years old) and a crazy love for the theater. They first met when he was studying at the National School and she at the conservatory. Years later, between 1989 and 1991, they were called to play a couple in the TV series The big vortex. However, it was not until they reached the age of 49 that they fell in love.

“We performed in the theater with the play Ivanov by Anton Chekhov at Duceppe, and that was where it happened, Gilles Renaud remembers. It was a real thunderclap! »

“On premiere night, we gave each other small gifts,” he continues with shining eyes. We got the same book: The old grief by Jacques Poulin. It was an incredible case that we saw as a sign. »

As they were both in a romantic relationship and had three children each, this love came at first sight with its share of difficult stages of living for the members of the two families.

“It was hard to admit to herself that something important was happening to us,” Louise continues gently. But I really had the feeling that it was the man of my life I met. I felt it was something important and I could not miss it in my life, I should have the courage to go for it. »

Together for 28 years and married for 26 beautiful years, they have never regretted having had the courage to believe in their love.

♦ – We want to see the couple – interpret a couple! – in the movie The key (working title), which will be recorded in Moncton, New Brunswick in March. – Gilles Renaud is going to TNM with the play Dear Chekhov by Michel Tremblay, directed by Serge Denoncourt. Seen from 3 to 28 May.
