2022 Freeride World Champions crowned by Verbier Xtreme

The difficult conditions did not get over by the talent freeriderswho set new standards by mixing freeride and freestyle on the steepest slopes of Bec Des Rosses.

Manuela Mandl (AUT) delivered a masterful run for its victory in women’s snowboarding. Although she was not in contention for the World Cup, she won by a margin of almost 11 points. Victor De Le Rue (FRA) was back on Xtreme as a Wildcard and came out on top in men’s snowboarding with a high speed descent through the steepest part of the place.

“It’s a victory that I feel deserved given the very difficult conditions we had. It was one of the biggest goals of my career to win at least once in Verbier, and here it’s accomplished! So yes, I am very happy! ” declared Manuela Mandl.

Both ski categories were won by Swiss skiers. As a 22-year-old, the new recruit of FWT, Sybille Blanjean (SUI), took the victory in the women’s skiing. Blanjean from Verbier grew up watching the legendary Xtreme and won in his first attempt. Maxime Chabloz (SUI)who took the victory in men’s skiing, once again impressed the judges with his combination of technical skiing and high-flying freestyle elements.

“I was so scared this morning that I cried in my father’s arms. But I went there and I thought I was going to have fun. The race was really hard, but I managed to keep going. It’s my first podium in the Tour, and the fact that it’s a home win really means a lot! » Explain Sybille Blanjean.

World Champions in 2022

Tiphanie Perrotin (FRA) won by a small margin to become FWT Women’s Snowboard Champion. Erika Vikander (USA) had the gold medal all season, but Perrotin passed her in the overall standings by 500 points. After becoming number two overall in 2021, Blake Møller (USA) became FWT Men’s Snowboard Champion.

“We expected difficult conditions, but these are the best we’ve had this year! I had a pretty slow start to the season at the first competition in Spain, but my results kept getting better for each stage, I could not be happier than today. ” developed Blake Møller.

Jess Hotter (NZL) won the title of FWT champion in women’s skiing. Though Hedvig Wessel (NOR) chased her all season, Hotter was out of reach in the overall standings with two wins and a 2nd place finish. Maxime Chabloz (SUI) ended his rookie season on the circuit not only with a win but also with the title of freeride world champion in men’s skiing. Chabloz ends the season with three event wins, having previously won at Ordino Arcalís and Kicking Horse Golden.

“These two or three weeks have been very emotional. After two victories, everyone expects you to do really well. Fieberbrunn was tough with a bad result, so competing here and taking the victory with the support of the home crowd is just amazing!” Explain Maxim Chabloz.

Freeride World Tour 2022 is over

Xtreme Verbier marks the end of FWT 2022! The party in Verbier continues well into the night, but the story is not quite over. The final events of the FWQ Finals take place this week. They will be crucial in determining qualified riders and new entrants for FWT 2023. Updates to the FWT 2023 calendar and the full rider list will be announced soon. For even more sensations this summer, get ready for the E-Bike Tour starting in June.

The unique spirit of the Freeride World Tour

Freeriding is the purest form of skiing and snowboarding. The riders set off on a natural and unchanged hillside, without a defined route and without a stopwatch. Forget placing slalom poles at the bottom of the mountain. Forget building jumps, half-pipes and tables. Forget slope maintenance. Freeride competitions are about playing with the terrain features found on every side of the mountain, in the most exciting and basic format possible. There is a start gate at the top and a finish gate at the bottom. That’s all.

To evaluate a race, the judges use a points system from 0 to 100. The purpose of this system approved by the riders is to have a single rating system for all the competitions in FWT, FWQ and FJT, and which allows each riding style. to have the opportunity to win. Judges are fully certified and supervised by a Chief Justice. They use an evolutionary method, but there will always be a human factor that can lead to different interpretations of the lineage. It is part of freeriding as a sport and must be accepted by both riders and judges. For the FWT events, the jury consists of 6 judges: 4 judges, 1 main judge and 1 video judge (3 from the ski world and 3 from the snowboard world). The assessment criteria are: the difficulty of the line, the control, the fluidity, the jumps and the tricks and finally the technique.
