Two Israeli Arabs identified by the Jewish state intelligence service as local Islamic State agents have been killed after an attack in Hadera, northern Israel. Two police officers, one of whom also had French citizenship, died in this attack on Sunday night.

At least two police officers died and several people were injured in an attack claimed by Islamic State (IS) in the Israeli city of Hadera (north) on Sunday, March 27.

Dudu Boani, a senior police official in the area, said the two dead were two policemen and that special forces had killed the assailants, two Israeli Arabs identified by Israeli intelligence as local ISIS agents.

The funeral of these 19-year-old policemen belonging to the Israeli border police is set to take place on Monday, March 28. One of the two victims, Shirel Abukrat, had French and Israeli nationality, according to the French embassy in Tel Aviv.

Israeli police said they had conducted searches in the Arab city of Umm el-Fahm, about 20 kilometers from Hadera, where the attack took place on Sunday night, in cooperation with the Israeli security service Shin Beth. “After the searches, security forces arrested three residents suspected of belonging to a terrorist organization. Two other suspects were arrested elsewhere,” police said in a statement Monday.

An automatic weapon attack

“Two members of the Jewish police force were killed and several others wounded in an attack by an infiltrated commando,” IS claimed in a statement released Monday on a propaganda website indicating that two of its militants were the perpetrators of the shooting.

Surveillance footage from Hadera, a city between Tel Aviv and Haifa, shows two men opening fire with automatic weapons in a street where cars are driving before heading for the sidewalk.

But “two members of the border police’s counter-terrorism units, who were in a restaurant near the scene of the attack, came out and neutralized the attackers,” an Israeli security source told AFP.

Ayman Odeh, leader of the “Joined List”, a group of Arab Israeli political parties concentrating their support in the north of the country, condemned the attack, saying it “had nothing to do with the political struggle it Arab public performs for its rights “.

In separate statements, the Palestinian armed Islamist movements praised Hamas and Islamic Jihad “the heroic Hadera operation”, in which Hamas said it was “carried out in response to the normalization summit on our country”. Because it happens when Israel hosted a summit on Sunday and Monday, where the heads of diplomacy from the United States, Egypt, the Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco gathered in a locality in the Negev desert (south).

Negev Summit

This attack in Hadera comes a few days after the second in southern Israel, in Beersheva, which left four people dead. The assailant in this stabbing and hitting attack was identified by Israeli authorities as a teacher who in 2016 was sentenced to four years in prison for planning to travel to Syria to fight in IS.

“Another attack by ISIS supporters inside Israel is forcing security forces to quickly adapt to the new threat,” the Israeli prime minister said Monday. “I invite the citizens to remain vigilant. Together we can also defeat this enemy.”

Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz held consultations with police and the army chief on Sunday night, while Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who spoke earlier in the day in Jerusalem with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, visited Hadera. He spoke to local officials there, his office said.

The head of Israeli diplomacy, Yair Lapid, said he had “informed” the participants in the Negev summit. “All foreign ministers condemned the attack and conveyed their condolences to the families of the victims,” he said in a statement.
